WHAT ARE COMMUNITY SUPPORT SERVICES?

Community support services help people to live at home safely and stay connected to their communities. Various community agencies deliver a wide range of diverse programs and services including:

Caregiver services
Caregiver services support family members and friends in their care-giving roles by providing counselling and relief from care duties. Caregiver services include:

  • respite;
  • support and counseling;
  • training, information and education; and
  • volunteer hospice visiting.

Community services
Community services reduce feelings of isolation, foster friendships, create experiences for young and old, and offer escorted rides to essential appointments. Community services include:

  • adult day programs;
  • Alzheimer and dementia overnight care;
  • friendly visiting;
  • intergenerational programs;
  • social and recreational programs;
  • transportation; and
  • grocery and shopping buses.

Health services
Health services provide care in the home and community for those in need of special help due to illness, disability, or age-related limitation. Health services include:

  • therapies such as occupational therapy and physiotherapy;
  • foot care;
  • palliative care;
  • personal support; and
  • housing support.

Attendant care services

  • getting in and out of bed;
  • personal hygiene such as bathing, cleaning teeth and brushing hair;
  • food preparation; and
  • other basic activities that help a person get up and out to work.

Home services
Home services help people live safely and securely on their own and provide assistance with everyday household activities. Home services include:

  • emergency response systems;
  • home help, homemaking and snow removal;
  • home maintenance and repair;
  • intervention and assistance;
  • life skills services for people with disabilities; and
  • security checks and reassurance.

Nutrition services
Nutrition services provide healthy, home-delivered meals and lively community dining events. Nutrition services include:

  • congregate dining, also known as Diner's Club and Wheels to Meals;
  • Meals on Wheels; and
