WHERE
WE STAND
When
it comes to affordable
housing,
the position of the Coalition of Community Health and Resource Centres
is clear and unequivocal:
"25
percent of all housing units built in Ottawa should be affordable."
Now
more than ever, it is vital that we protect low-income housing and ensure
appropriate government involvement at all levels.
What
do we mean by affordable?
Fifteen
percent of all new housing should be affordable to households with family
incomes of no more than $36,300 per annum; ten percent should be affordable
for households with family incomes of no more than $47,300 per annum.
How
can so many be unable to afford adequate housing in a city like ours?
Building
more rental units alone will not solve Ottawa's lack of affordable housing.
Canadians with modest incomes must have access to adequate housing they
can afford. And governments must make money available to build homes for
those in greatest need.
Canada
and Ontario Sign an Affordable Housing Agreement
In
December 2002, the governments of Canada and Ontario announced the first
phase of the Canada/Ontario Housing program, which includes a Community
Rental Housing Program to provide affordable housing. Without adequate
contributions from the provincial government, however, the Community Rental
Housing Program will not result in new affordable housing in Ottawa.
