JUST THE FACTS

U.N. human-rights bodies recently reviewed Canada's record on poverty. They expressed alarm at the dramatic increases in homelessness and hunger in so affluent a country. They also found that social-program cuts discriminate against women, children, Aboriginal people and many of the most vulnerable in society.

  • 75 percent of an individual's health is determined by physical, social and economic environments. (The Kirby Report on the Federal Role in Health Care.)
  • One in five-or approximately 1.14 million-Canadian children live in poverty.
  • 11.8 percent of children under six in Ottawa belong to families on social assistance.
  • One person working at minimum wage earns $1,030 per month before deductions: rent on a one-bedroom apartment in Ottawa costs $762 per month, a two-bedroom apartment costs $914 per month.
  • 20 percent of families in Ottawa spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing.
  • 17 percent of all female seniors and 6 percent of all male seniors have annual incomes of less than $10,000.
  • 12 percent of families in Ottawa are living on less than $20,000 per year; 84 percent of these are headed by single-parent mothers.
