OUR
VISION FOR A NEW SYSTEM
Community
health and resource centres are ideally situated to play key roles in
a new employment - support system for Ottawa. CHRCs already offer many
employment-support programs. However, programming gaps remain-both in
funding, and in services. While all centres offer crisis and counseling
services, fewer than half offer what can be considered formal life-skills
training.
Improving
Accessibility
We
want to increase accessibility to employment programs. We want to be able
to identify needs in our own communities, and organize and host targeted
workshops and courses. Using CHRCs as a delivery network will significantly
increase access to programs.
Developing
Programs
We
want to develop and deliver comprehensive employment programs to groups
and individuals experiencing barriers to employment -such as women from
abusive relationships, new Canadians, and at-risk youth. As we have demonstrated
in the past, our combined offering of health and social services and our
strong knowledge of the communities we serve enables us to develop and
deliver innovative programs successfully.
Increasing
Capacity
Every
CHRC should have the capacity to support employment programs fully, and
to ensure their accessibility to those in need. Not every centre needs
to offer all services, but every centre should have the capacity to reach
out to community members, identify employment issues and deliver basic
programs.
