JUST
THE FACTS - WHAT WE'RE DOING NOW
Many
of Ottawa's community health and resource centres have initiated innovative
employment programs to address the needs of individuals and groups. Many
of these programs, however, are small because funding is available on
a year-to-year or project-to-project basis only. Such unpredictable funding
makes it difficult to hire and retain staff to plan and implement these
programs across the city.
Working
Your Way to Success
Funded
by HRDC, the Working Your Way to Success program focuses on job-search
strategies for people ready to work. It is currently available at Vanier,
Carlington and Pinecrest-Queensway CHRCs. Extra staff and increased resources
are required to deliver the program to all Ottawa residents in need.
The
Pre-Employment Program
Many
people are not yet ready to work or engage in formal training. Such individuals
often require access to a range of supports such as counseling and anger
management before they will be able to participate in employment programs.
These supports are currently available only to specific groups with particular
needs, the Pre-employment Program makes them available to the wider community.
Targeted
Programs for Specific Groups
Other
innovative career-planning and job-search programs provide training tailored
to meet the needs of specific client groups. These programs include Urban
Shift Learning, Youth Aquatics, Personal Support Worker, and Working Together
to Employ Abused Women. Paid job-placement programs include Urban Shift
Living, Working Together, Practice Firm, and Youth to Retail.
Millennium
Learning Centres
Additional
job-search help comes through the Millennium Learning Centres that exist
at all CHRCs. Assistance with job searches is provided by volunteers and
is helpful for those actively seeking work, applying for jobs and attending
interviews. Millennium Learning Centres, however, are not currently equipped
to address the needs of clients who require greater levels of assistance.
